The Leasehold Valuation Tribunal (LVT) was set up in 1997 and was established to deal with the rising number of complaints from lessees that were in dispute with their landlords or managing agents. The LVT is an offshoot of the Rent Tribunal Service and powers to adjudicate in disputes and it''s decisions are enforceable bring an end to endless squabbles between landlords and lessees and the stress that that brings with it.
The LVT is quite informal and some consider it to be a court-lite procedure but it should not be considered to be a friendly discussion amongst parties. Any claims and counterclaims must be supported by the appropriate documentation. This is why it is sometimes advisable to employ an expert to act for you.
The LVT costs are not expensive but gathering any necessary evidence to support your claim and employing experts to help you can be very costly. Of course this very much depends on the nature of your claim. If you are simply asking the LVT to look at a simple dispute it can be inexpensive. If however you are asking them to consider the cost of a lease extension the costs will soon mount up so careful consideration should be given to this.
The LVT are a wholly independent government body that is run by experts and they deal with a whole array of issues from ground rent disputes, service charges, maintenance charges and much much more. If you would like to visit their site we have enclosed a link for you in our useful links section.
